01 / OPPORTUNITY

The challenge.

The physical ingredients already existed: forestry and service roads through the Hūnua Ranges, connections to Clevedon and Kaiaua, and access to the wider New Zealand Cycle Trail network.

But they had not yet been assembled into a coherent visitor product. Early thinking centred on promoting a half-day e-mountain-bike trail. The larger opportunity was to create a connector between places, experiences and businesses—something that could generate wider economic value rather than simply put a route on a map.

02 / ACTION

What we did.

Beyond Usual brought the existing research, route plans, physical assets and stakeholder ambitions together to identify the opportunity behind the trail.

We created the Hūnua Traverse name and identity, developed a hierarchy of ride experiences and future products, and connected the route with Clevedon, Kaiaua, the Hauraki Rail Trail and the wider national cycling network. The work identified openings for shuttles, bike hire, accommodation, hospitality, guided experiences, events and overnight adventures.

The identity was grounded in the landscape. Simplified mountain forms express the double traverse across the maunga. We also worked with Mana Whenua artist Tessa Harris, who has whakapapa to Kohukohunui, on the rauponga artwork used as the welcome and protective header across signage and website communications. It represents shelter, guardianship and the filtered light of the ferns along the trail, and remains distinct from the general brand system.

We then turned the proposition into practical visitor tools: route maps, wayfinding, trail signage, visitor information, the website, promotional material and rider feedback systems.

03 / MOVEMENT

What changed.

Hūnua Traverse became a visible, usable and increasingly understood destination experience—not simply a line on a map.

The framework allows the route to support different products over time, from day rides and gravel challenges to bikepacking, family experiences, overnight adventures and connections with Tour Aotearoa. That creates more ways for local businesses and communities to participate.

A 2024 rider survey provided encouraging early evidence: 96% of surveyed users responded positively, almost every respondent said they would ride it again, and the mix of conventional mountain bikes, gravel bikes and e-bikes demonstrated appeal beyond a single audience. The route’s 44 kilometres, around 1,100 metres of climbing and wider network connections give it the substance to grow as both an experience and an economic connector.

44 km. 1,100 m. 96% positive rider feedback.
