Years ago, when Beyond Usual made products and built brands, we wrote a blunt internal note about how not to be an arsehole.
The work has changed. The principle has not.
Every place and every economic problem is different. We do not believe good judgement can be replaced by a giant rulebook. We do believe our choices should create positive value, avoid shifting the cost onto somebody else and leave the people and places we work with stronger.
Leave more value than we take
Our work should build confidence, capability, relationships and opportunity—not just produce an output. A finished project matters. What it enables next matters more.
Start with what is already there
Places are not blank canvases. They already contain knowledge, culture, businesses, assets, constraints and ambition. We begin there, and we do not import an answer simply because it worked somewhere else.
Work with people, not over them
Local leaders and communities understand their context in ways an external partner cannot reproduce. Our role is to add capability, make useful connections and help work move—not to replace local ownership or create dependency.
Make the thinking usable
A strategy should help somebody make a better decision. A report should be clear enough to use. A design should make intent visible. We care about the big direction and what needs to happen next Monday morning.
Own the consequences
We stay interested after the idea. We help turn direction into action, measure what the work was designed to change and say plainly what the evidence does—and does not—show.
Be ambitious without being extractive
We choose work and partners with care. We will not manufacture a story unsupported by reality, trade somebody else’s wellbeing for a tidy outcome or treat local value as something to take away.
Keep the edge. Lose the ego.
We like bold ideas, clear opinions and a bit of irreverence. We do not do humour, communication or cleverness at the expense of another person’s dignity. The work should be memorable because it is useful, not because we made ourselves the main character.
Build for compounding
The strongest work makes the next piece of work easier. One connection creates another. Capability attracts capability. Confidence unlocks investment. Wherever possible, we design interventions that strengthen the system around them.
The short version: be ambitious, be useful, tell the truth and leave it better.
